It goes without saying how scary denim cut-offs are. Rihanna has strutted the goods all over town in ragged jean shorts since last summer, usually with ripped fishnets and waist knotted shirts and tees, and most recently with a fire crotch sweatshirt and hooker boots. Yes, we are terrified of this trend.
Baring the thighs is a daunting venture. You need great legs or supreme body confidence, and a bit of natural-looking colour. The trick to wearing denim shorts is keeping the separates loose and effortless. The whole look needs to look ‘thrown-on’. There is really no need for heels. Rihanna has shown us that this look screams desperado-sex-on-a-stick. A strappy flat or metallic ballerina pump will keep the breezy chic without looking like you’re just legging it out to get milk. But who have we found rocking this look?
Our inspirations for the cut-off look are Azealia Banks in her ’212′ video and Beyonce Knowles on holiday in St.Barts this Easter weekend past. Azealia is an enroyable talent with a tough, boyish, sexy chic we haven’t seen since the days of Salt’N'Pepa and Nenah Cherry. We just couldn’t love her more. Her striped Mickey Mouse knit with shorts and long plaits are the perfect youthful balance with her hard, colourful, adult-only lyrics.
Beyoncé also kept it loose but ladylike in a Gucci print blouse, exuberant jewelry and floppy white hat boarding a yacht in the Caribbean. Her pregnancy really is a distant memory, isn’t it? Regardless, Mrs. Carter looks so fresh, relaxed and chic. Rihanna has a lot to learn.
We do our best to interpret the trends here at BOHOMOTH. Denim shorts were a serious no-no in the context of the Rihanna fashion rollercoaster, but we are willing to BOHO REPRO these two summer looks. Floppy hat and Rapunzel plaits optional.
