Last night Jameson and I trundled (ran excitedly) through the heat to catch Madonna Louise Ciccone’s final European leg of the MDNA world tour in Nice in the South of France.

I’ve been a bit so-so on whether I wanted to go, based on the lukewarm to tepid reviews I’d read online.

But as soon as the fierce bitch strutted out to the strains of Girl Gone Wild the goose-bumps and rush of excitement that you get from seeing Madge live soon came flooding back.

If you have the chance to go and see the MDNA tour and aren’t sure then let me implore you now: GO- you won’t regret it.

Yes, I’m iffy about her new stuff, but she soon makes up for it when she sings the classics with a modern twist. Her new, slowed-down rendition of Like a Virgin for example is stunning and so charged with emotion as she performs it, you almost forget to breathe.

You can’t help but think she’s singing this new version for boy-toy lover Brahim Zaibat- more of that later.

At 54-years-old, Madge easily keeps up with her twenty-something dancers- effortlessly keeping up the pace throughout a turbo-charged 1.5 hour set in roughly 36° heat.

No mean feat. I was sweating just standing watching. No lie.

We were lucky enough to be spitting distance from the stage and, her body is f-cking killer, she still has a great arse and legs. She’s still got that dancer physique- so tight and toned, and, sure enough I realised just as I always do whenever I have gone to see her in the past that, yes, I really could manage that hour in the gym five nights a week if I put my mind to it.

The only time I saw her miss a step was during Gimme all your Luving when she slightly stumbled up one of the steps but like a true pro she went into the next move no problem at all.

Brahim and his Pockemon crew dancer buddies, made up of childhood friends from the streets of Marseille were A-f-cking- MAZING. They do all this jumping about and up and down on one hand and all that head-spinning, break-dancing stuff. She’s not just employing him because she’s f-cking him.

Brahim and Madge’s chemistry is undeniable. Whilst she didn’t openly favour him over the other dancers a la J-Lo and C-Smart, at one point she went up and bumped fists with him and he’d give her these little adoring looks, for example when she was giving a viva la revolution type speech to the crowd, imploring everyone to treat each other with “humanity”.

They went on to do this dance routine where he was rubbing his oh so f-cking toned buff body against hers and you could see that they spend a LOT of time behind closed doors with him throwing her around the bedroom, tying her up and rocking her world. I had lady wood just watching, as disgusting as it sounds.

I’m convinced now that they adore each other and, yes, no doubt she doesn’t discuss business plans or world affairs with him but it’s going on two years now and I think they’re the real deal. Who gives a sh-te if he’s younger than her? Good on her and Madge- if you’re reading, chuck him this way when you’re done with him, eh?

When she sang the emotionally-charged, slowed-down Like A Virgin (in a yellow balaclava to support Russia’s Pussy Riot), it was almost as if she was singing about Brahim saving and renewing her sexually from the ashes of the Guy Ritchie divorce.

Here’s video of her doing the same song and sobbing in Berlin (we don’t have video of her in Nice up on youtube yet).

Jameson says no, it was just an artistic expression of a song she’s reinterpreted many times in the past and maybe the heat was getting to my poor, frazzled brain cells but, I dunno, Madge seems different. Dare I say- happy?.

In person and doing dance moves that require her to be carried on her back by a group of male dancers, you can see she’s had a facelift.

I mean, we all know she has but her visage is looking alright when she stands and her hair’s been done, but when she’s dripping with sweat and leaping around doing moves that would test a professional half her age you can see. Just an observation we both had.

It was an absolutely brilliant show and you can’t beat Madge for an evening of pure, 100% top of her game true pro entertainment. I’m really happy we went.

What I love about Madge is she does not give a f-ck about her critics, knows what she wants and goes after it whole-heartedly, she says what she likes and she likes what she bloody well says and, at 54 years old she’s refusing to lie down and grow old- she’s out there living life and taking it firmly by the balls with both hands and a spike-heeled foot.

And, she hates Gwyneth Paltrow, Stella McCartney and Elton John. – What’s not to adore?

She’s still the Queen of pop- always has been and always will be, no matter how many young pretenders try to steal her throne.

    Great review x

  2. Mal Content says:

I saw the show earlier. Fucking awful. The new songs are crap, there’s a load of lipsynching, she was very late starting and the place only took off when she played her four hits.
Also dressing as an avenger and playing around with guns? Only 14 year old boys think that’s still cool, and the audience I was with was mostly 50 something mums.

  3. BOHOMOTH says:

Aw I dunno, Mal. I thought it was great…but I started off with low expectations.

  4. Jameson says:

I loved the show! As Bohomoth knows, I was hesitant about going to see this tour at first but now I am so glad I went, and today I keep thinking about the whole event. The European crowds are just fantastic, excited like everyone else at a concert but no attitude and no shoving. There was an element of decorum and literally a touch of Chanel and Dior in the audience.

Madonna still puts on a top show with all the bells & whistles. It was hot out there, I was in a light, practically see-thru t-shirt and shorts and could feel trickles of sweat sliding down my smooth crack. Madonna and her crew must’ve been real Sweaty Betty’s out there pulling every dance move in that heat!

Everyone was in top form, and because we were so close to the stage, I would look at the dancers and wonder if they are really happy and they seemed to be in their element, they had a spark in their eyes. Madonna truly seemed happy too. I kept thinking, she doesn’t have to do this anymore, but you can still see that competitive streak in her, a strong work ethic and yes, she does still keep up to the 20 year olds!

There are just too many things to point out about last night’s performance and I felt like a giddy school girl afterwards talking about the whole thing.

If you get a chance, go see the MDNA tour! I literally had goose bumps three times, would catch myself smiling a lot and my eyes even welled up with tears a couple of times.

    Love her faux shitty apartment.

  7. lisa says:

I saw her in Zurich on saturday and it was a bit lame – stadium well under capacity (unlike for coldplay in May) and she never really managed to get the crowd fired up. I think she was let down by the technical stuff – the sound was rubbish and the “big” screens were pretty small so we really couldn’t see much from where we were sitting. My assistant was standing close to the stage and had a much better time though. And, dare I say it, but I kind of wish she was lip-synching as she sounded pretty rough.

  8. Catherine says:

Do you know what led to Madge & Gwyneth’s big breakup? Is it all Tracy Anderson-related?

  9. twiggy twiggy says:

Goddamn the sweat is glistening off that woman and she’s working it HARD. Now THAT is a pro, a real dyed-in-the-wool one-of-a-kind megastar for the ages. Mad respect for Madge, spaced-age-French-Riviera getup or not!!
