The Obamas kicked off their busy Inauguration Day with an early service at St. John’s Church in Washington D.C. this morning.

All eyes were on Michelle, who was wearing a navy silk jacquard coat and dress, which was custom-made by American menswear designer Thom Browne, with a Reed Krakoff cardigan, Cathy Waterman necklace, J.Crew belt and kitten heels.

Browne is currently in Paris for the menswear fashion week collections and only found out that the First Lady had picked his outfit to wear half an hour before footage of the Obamas was screened on televisions across the States.

“It’s overwhelming,” the American designer said in a telephone interview from France.  ”It is one of those rare moments in someone’s career that you will always remember. There’s not a word that can really describe it. It’s just amazing. She’s such a strong woman. I wanted her to feel good in it and to feel comfortable, strong, feminine and beautiful.”

And, Michelle and Baracks’ daughters (or should that be FKOTUS – First Kids Of the United States?) put in a fashion-savvy show as well. Sasha picked out a a purple Kate Spade topper and dress, and Malia wore a plum J.Crew coat.

As is the usual way, all of the First Lady’s outfits from the Inaugural ceremonies will be sent to the National Archives, so we’ll never see this outfit on her again.

Perhaps the United Kingdom’s Discount Duchess Kate Middleton who endlessly recycles outfits could take note of this tradition?
