Madonna Reveals She Was Raped at Knifepoint When She First moved to New York

Madonna's on the cover of Harper's Bazaar's 'daring' issue, although inside she's photographed by Terry Richardson - which is about as daring as eating a watercress sandwich and with a theme she's done to death to boot. Madge's fishnet-covered arse, anyone?... Inside the magazine, the 55-year-old pens an essay about being daring and, you guessed it - she says she's been daring her whole life (which she has to be fair). She gives examples such as not shaving her legs in school and then after her first divorce turning to Kabollocks and sitting at the back of a classroom filled with men aged 35. Madge writes: 'I decided that I needed to be more than a girl with gold teeth and gangster boyfriends'. I'm not sure where she went wrong with that little vow. The essay takes a dark turn when she reveals she was raped at knifepoint when she first arrived in New York - where she had gone to become a "REAL artist ... To be able to express myself in a city of nonconformists. To revel and shimmy and shake in a world and be surrounded by daring people."
She says: 'New York wasn't everything I thought it would be. It did not welcome me with open arms. The first year, I was held up at gunpoint. Raped on the roof of a building I was dragged up to with a knife in my back, and had my apartment broken into three times. I don't know why; I had nothing of value after they took my radio the first time.'
This isn't the first time Madonna's spoken about this horrifying incident - she told NME about it back in 1995, saying it was "devastating", but "forced" her to "be a survivor". She goes on to talk about moving to England being a 'daring' act, because she didn't understand the class system or pub culture (or Guy and his mates constantly mocking her and nicknaming her 'Madge' then continuing to call her it when she asked them not to). But eventually she realised that she had "an embarrassment of riches" and decided to help Malawi before going back to New York and teaching her four children to "be daring". It's an interesting read and you can tell that unlike other celebrity essays (coughs, Angelina) Madonna really did write it herself. She closes it with: "In my book, everyone is doing something daring. Please open this book. I dare you." If being daring means accepting a cup of tea that Uncle Terry Richardson's made me during a photo-shoot then I think I'll pass...

    She’s alright is Madonna.

Plus heard Don’t Tell Me today. And danced. *choon*

I tend to love women whose authentic voices come through so powerfully, whether they are speaking/writing the words themselves, or (more difficult, I think) conveying who you are, to the extent that you want to, through a third party.

I joke that I’m not going to be able to watch a single movie in Hollywood soon if they don’t go back to putting models on the covers of fashion magazines :) Sometimes an actor is just so brainless I can’t bear to watch her anything ever again. But, I’ve been pleasantly surprised as well. It evens out.

I’m not a Madonna fan. Never really was. But I’ve always respected her celebration of the power of women, always. So, yeah. I’m agreeing with your much more succinct summation about Madonna, Milly F. She’s alright.

She actually looks rather beautiful in those photos, as opposed to the striking and unusual appeal of her pre-40s face. I know there has been more than the odd touch-up, but her face seems to get more traditionally beautiful as she ages. (I happen to prefer striking and unusual, but she looks fab in these pictures.)

I remember reading about her attempted rape shortly after she released her ‘coffee table book’, Sex in 1992. If I remember correctly, the f&cker forced her to give him a blowjob. She should have bitten it off, but I expect she was concentrating on just staying alive.

    Dreadful.

What on earth does she do to her arse to make it look like that though. It couldn’t merely crack walnuts. I reckon it could open you a tin of beans.
