Don’t Worry, Ladies, We Have A Saviour… Her Name Is Beyoncé

Beyoncé Beyoncé has written an open letter about her thoughts on feminism entitled Gender Equality Is A Myth - which features in Maria Shriver's The Shriver Report: A Woman's Nation Pushes Back from the Brink. The 32-year-old diva says that gender equality isn't a reality yet and we have to teach our boys the rules of respect and our girls to reach as high as possible:
"We need to stop buying into the myth about gender equality," 'Yoncé writes.  "It isn't a reality yet. Today, women make up half of the U.S. workforce, but the average working woman earns only 77 percent of what the average working man makes. But unless women and men both say this is unacceptable, things will not change. "Humanity requires both men and women, and we are equally important and need one another. So why are we viewed as less than equal? These old attitudes are drilled into us from the very beginning. We have to teach our boys the rules of equality and respect, so that as they grow up, gender equality becomes a natural way of life. And we have to teach our girls that they can reach as high as humanly possible."
I wonder what Beyowulf's husband Jay Z makes of all this equality chatter? Just last Friday I was watching footage of the groupie loving rapper being interviewed back in 1992 while two women had oral sex for his entertainment right beside him. Beyoncé Jay Z gif I expect that Jay told his wife that the video proves he has always been a fan of sexual equality because he let the pair of groupies have sex with each other as well as him.

I wonder who really wrote that for her…?

  2. Peggy Guggenheim says:

Please inform me if you know, but why did she title her current tour the Mrs. Carter tour? Yes, I think it’s something she’s inviting us to read into, and to me, it would appear to reinforce a traditional view of married womanhood that runs contradictory to what she’s saying above about equality. Because in reality, both her AND Jay-Z hyphenated their last names together.

    • Ant0scar says:

Oh Peggy. Many’s the dissertation that has been written on this. Subversive? Maybe. Feminist? Potentially. Marketing? Definitely. More anon – I need a drink…

      • Jen Paul says:

Le sigh. Yeah it’s all a moot point because as a gazillionaire superstar Beyoncé’s paid a ridiculously OTT amount and knows feck all about “the average working woman” or how much of a difference earning 23% less makes every week. She probably thinks it means you have to travel first class once out of every 100 trips abroad each year not private. Or that the husband has to pay to charter the yacht on your med vacation, not you.

She’d soon shut up if the men in her entourage told her they work as hard as she does so should be paid the same as her.

It’s like Goop giving women tips to simplify their lives, they don’t live in our world and talking as if they do comes across as a patronising pat on the head, and disingenuous to boot.

  3. Feminist icon, Beyonce. Has a certain ring to it. If you’re Beyonce.

  4. Sugartits says:

I have always thought that were the suffragettes about today, they would be absolutely blown away with Beyonce’s effort for equality for women.
Encouraging men worldwide to ‘Put a ring on it’.

‘It’, being their long term partners.

    • Jen Paul says:

ah yes and I’m sure they’d be impressed by her foot-tapping take on ‘independent women’ and their life being all about ‘the watch I’m wear-ing.. I bought it!’.

  5. Flffgrrrlr says:

Honestly, I think I’m a bit dumbstruck. I’m firmly committed to equal pay, and work to advance. Whilst I don’t believe Beyonce wrote this, and I’m not sure what she’s selling with it – fark, I approve of the message. Maybe the cause can do with a megastar trumpeting it? Maybe the more people like her (and anyone) says it, the closer we get to having everyone actually believe it? She’s actually quite right that unfortunately many men don’t tend to give a sh!t about what they view as women’s issues. Women’s issue are people issues, not just a woman’s problem people. I dunno though – I’m still slightly unnerved…

  6. Goose says:

Good on her I say! An example from my children’s school: a brother and sister in the school. His birthday party is laser tag. Sister is there. Her birthday party is a tea party. Brother is not there. She was taken to his and encouraged to tolerate it. He was not taken to hers because, well you know, boys will be boys. We need women like Beyoncé to say it. We need younger women to think about it! We need young men to hear about it.
