If truth be told, when I stood back from Victoria Beckham’s first show at this first of the Spring 2013 fashion weeks at the New York Public Library, it wasn’t all bad. But it wasn’t all good either. Let’s have a gander at the good, the bad and the expected at VB Spring 2013.
There’s an undercurrent of intelligence in the line and palette of this collection – albeit a bunch of geek chic Bauhaus cheerleaders.
The hats won’t be for most people (including myself) but they added diversity to a collection of repeated silhouettes in a vibrant orange-red, white and black.
I did enjoy the splashes of red, the crochet panelling and boxy volume, as well as the introduction of pants, jackets and blouses by the ‘designer’.
I quite enjoyed the ‘minimalist does tennis’ of some of the looks.
What was expected was trend following in lace and mesh cut-out and layering, and VB’s tendence to the tight day dress and the short collar.
In fact this dress that she wore herself on the day was a clear interpretation of a Valentino look of earlier this year on Cameron Diaz.
Layered effect in mixed fabric and exposed underwear in a mini flounced skirt.
The bags were big clutches with laser-cuts (hello, Alaia) and chain-link handles (hello, Chanel).
The ugly:
Just kidding. It was adorable that he was taking pics on his phone to send to his mother.
Really though the beauty story was pulled from Raf Simons at Dior, with all of the panache removed. That was some starkly fug hair and make-up.
I couldn’t bear the shoes: leather knee and ankle boots with open-toes and heels, flat thong sandals of same treatment, and pointed brogues.
It pained me to read Manolo Blahnik’s gushing over the collaboration.
Who would be proud of this hodge-podge of idea vomit.
So when it comes down to it, it was a well thought out collection, albeit ugly and impractical in places. I cannot in my brain of brains believe that Beckham designed anything other than the shoes.
The Bauhaus vibe is simply too smart for a gal who struggles to get through an issue of Glamour magazine. This is the work of talented experienced designers and trend-casting agencies, both of which are available for hire. As is Manolo Blahnik it would seem.
Victoria, Victoria Beckham is due to walk as I write so we’ll see what art history books she checked out for that show.

Very comprehensive shake down, Shiny. Little to get excited about – maybe the flaring – but something a ‘classics’ dresser, like myself, would even bother to note – makes us less dull.
Buy? Not this time. Go learn and get inspired? Please. You have style. Go learn and create.
Yes! You do it Shiny. We KNOW you can. We’d ALL buy and wear and love your wares (and brag about them).

I think so. She’s learning the ropes while trading on her own name. I think there’s a lot of editing and styling work done by her but I don’t think the core concepts are hers.
Yeah I find it hard to believe that anyone that wore *those* Cavalli gowns with *those* norks suddenly decided to have a modicum of taste. Has to be ‘brand’ Beckham dragging Wintour to these
This is a genius break-down Shiny. Really enjoyed reading it. So refreshing, especially after reading the sycophantic musings from the paid-off press who had seats at this (who get given excl. interviews with Posh or Becks at later dates).
